CHARLOTTE, N.C. — About 60 firefighters battled a two-alarm fire Sunday night at a smoke shop in a north Charlotte shopping center, and no one was hurt.

The Charlotte Fire Department was called to Fire Tobacco Zone in the 3700 block of West W.T. Harris Boulevard around 7 p.m. The shopping center sits near West Sugar Creek Road, in a stretch lined with retail stores and fast-food restaurants.

The Charlotte Fire Department handles calls inside the city, while multiple volunteer and county fire departments serve unincorporated Mecklenburg County.

The fire grew quickly. Crews called for a second alarm before 7:15 p.m., bringing more engines and firefighters to the scene, and medic crews also stood by in case anyone was hurt.

The fire was controlled in 42 minutes by approximately 60 firefighters. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and officials have not released a damage estimate for the shop or neighboring businesses.

Multi-alarm fires are not new to this part of the city. In October 2024, crews fought a two-alarm apartment fire on the 7000 block of Somerset Springs Drive in northeast Charlotte. In July 2025, a two-alarm fire broke out at a southwest Charlotte recycling center, where the building’s sprinkler system ultimately put out the flames.

Drivers who use West W.T. Harris Boulevard near West Sugar Creek Road may see crews or investigators at the shopping center as the investigation into Sunday’s fire continues this week.
