CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Brandon Miller put up a career-best 39 points Monday night, and the Charlotte Hornets survived a late Washington push to beat the Wizards 110-103 and move to 3-1 on the young season.

Miller did most of his damage in the second and third quarters, when he poured in 27 points and Charlotte seized control. It was the 14th time the fourth-year guard has topped 30, and the fourth time he has strung together back-to-back 30-point nights. The former Alabama star signed a five-year, $209 million extension just a week ago.

Charlotte looked safe with a 98-84 cushion and 5:15 left. Washington then got hot from deep, hitting five 3-pointers in the closing stretch to pull within 103-100 with 1:13 to go. Miller answered with a jumper and a free throw that made it 106-100 with 38.3 seconds remaining.

Naz Reid gave the Hornets 18 points and 12 rebounds. Grayson Allen scored 15, and Moussa Diabate added 11 points with 17 boards. Charlotte also won the glass overall, 54-41.

The Hornets are still waiting on three key players. Starters Coby White, out with a left calf injury, and Kon Knueppel, nursing a left hamstring, have not played yet, and reserve Grant Williams is also sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Anthony Davis paced Washington with a 29-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Trae Young added 22 and Kyshawn George chipped in 20. The Wizards, now 2-2, again played without top overall draft pick AJ Dybantsa, who is recovering from an ankle sprain. The loss also snapped a long run of Charlotte defeats in games Davis has played against them, a streak that went back to March 2016. Washington hosts Cleveland on Wednesday.
