A recent strike during Thanksgiving week saw airport workers advocating for an increase in wages. The strike, organized by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), lasted for 24 hours, with workers expressing frustration over “poverty wages” and a desire for greater respect on the job. Currently, the workers receive wages ranging from $12.50 to $19 per hour but are advocating for a substantial increase to between $22 and $25 per hour.

Approximately 800 workers are directly impacted by this push for wage increases and better working conditions. American Airlines, which contracts ABM and Prospect Airport Services for cleaning and passenger assistance roles, has said that it does not anticipate significant flight disruptions resulting from the strike, although delays have been reported.

Workers on the picket lines conveyed their struggles in making ends meet, stating that many find it difficult to afford basic necessities such as housing and food. Union representatives pointed out that high turnover rates and understaffing have further complicated their ability to serve passengers effectively. This has raised concerns over the quality of service during peak travel times, particularly as Charlotte airport officials expect record-high travel numbers over the Thanksgiving holiday, with over 1 million passengers projected to travel.

In addition to their strike action, union members have recently delivered postcards to the Charlotte City Council outlining their labor concerns. The City Attorney mentioned that some requested changes from the union may be limited by state labor laws. However, several City Council members have expressed support for examining a new ordinance that would consider worker concerns when awarding contracts at the airport.
