News Summary

The eighth annual BOOM Charlotte arts festival will take place from April 25-27, 2025, at a new location—the University City lakefront. After years in Plaza Midwood and Camp North End, the festival aims to enhance networking and offer diverse performances. Celebrating its ten-year journey, BOOM Charlotte highlights local and independent artists, with a focus on inclusivity and community. Artists can apply to participate until January 15, 2025, in a vibrant event that promises creativity and connection.

Exciting Relocation for the BOOM Charlotte Arts Festival!

Charlotte is ready to groove as the eighth annual BOOM Charlotte arts festival prepares to light up the city from April 25-27, 2025! The festival will take place in a brand-new spot this year—the University City lakefront area, which is all set to welcome art lovers and culture enthusiasts to a vibrant atmosphere surrounding The Shoppes at University Place.

From Humble Beginnings

Can you believe it’s been ten years since this creative event took its first steps? The festival kicked off as a series of pop-up performances in the Plaza Midwood area, thanks to the vision of designer and Que-OS board member Eric Ndelo. Since its official launch in 2016 by Manoj Kesavan, BOOM Charlotte has evolved significantly, celebrating the avant-garde and fringe aspects of dance, music, theatre, poetry, visual arts, and film. Talk about a colorful explosion of creativity!

New Location, New Opportunities

After hosting successful festivals in Plaza Midwood and Camp North End—the latter being the home for the last three festivals post-pandemic—the decision to move to University City feels like a fresh start. It’s all about creating a new environment that enables better networking for artists and attendees alike. This year’s relocation offers an exciting chance for everyone to explore performance spaces rather than just focusing on one main stage. What a great way to encourage people to discover more!

A Scenic Shift

The shift to the lakefront is set to elevate the artistic experience with its stunning views and natural beauty, contributing to a lively atmosphere. The artistic director is aware that this new backdrop will add layers of aesthetic appeal while also fostering energy throughout the festival’s duration.

A Two-Part Festival Experience

BOOM Charlotte will feature two main components this year: BOOM Fringe, which will provide ticketed, indoor experimental performances, and BOOM Intersection, offering free, outdoor performances and activities for all. Expect an impressive lineup with 11 edgy performances in BOOM Fringe, welcoming both returning favorites and new acts like Adrian Parrish and Brooke McCarthy.

BOOM Intersection promises to brim with energy and creativity, presenting various art performances, interactive installations, and exciting partnerships with local organizations, including the University City Regional Library and the Southern Eagle Singers. Who wouldn’t want to join this lively community celebration?

Celebrating Diversity

This festival places a spotlight on local and independent artists, emphasizing inclusivity by highlighting the talents of Black, immigrant, and Native American artists and cultures within the community. With an acceptance rate of 50% for artist applications, the festival is committed to maintaining a balance of voices and expressions, keeping the true spirit of collaboration and community alive. Rather than seeing other arts festivals as competition, BOOM founders believe in forming collaborative partnerships.

A Growing Attraction

Over the years, University City has seen immense growth, welcoming over 3 million guests this year! With a rich tapestry of diversity, it is the perfect place for BOOM Charlotte to set down its roots. The past two festivals attracted approximately 10,000-20,000 attendees, proving that the passion for arts and culture continues to thrive despite challenges faced during the pandemic.

Get Ready to Participate!

If you’re an artist eager to make your mark, there’s still time! Applications to participate in this year’s festival are open until January 15, 2025. With the support of grants and local sponsors, BOOM Charlotte works hard to keep this festival free or affordable for everyone to enjoy. So get out there, unleash your creative spirit, and join a thrilling celebration of the arts!

Mark your calendars for April 25-27, 2025, and prepare for a weekend filled with creativity, community, and connection at the vibrant BOOM Charlotte arts festival in University City!
