News Summary

A tragic mass shooting at a house party in the Mountain View community of Catawba County has resulted in the death of Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, and injuries to 11 others. The incident, which involved multiple shooters and various firearms, has prompted an extensive investigation by local authorities. Officials emphasized the need for community cooperation to address rising youth violence and ensure public safety. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.

Catawba County, North Carolina – A mass shooting at a house party in the Mountain View community early Sunday morning has left one person dead and 11 others injured, according to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office. The shooting occurred around 12:45 a.m. at a gathering held on Walnut Acres Drive, attracting an estimated 100 attendees, including teenagers and young adults.

The victim who lost his life has been identified as Shawn Patrick Hood, a 58-year-old resident of Lenoir, North Carolina. Reports indicate that one other individual is critically injured and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Charlotte. Some of the injured participants have since been treated and released, while others remain hospitalized due to the severity of their wounds.

Initial police responses indicated a noise complaint at the same residence just a few hours prior to the shooting, around 11 p.m. on Saturday night. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to handle the complaint and left shortly before the shots were fired. Following the incident, emergency services were overwhelmed with multiple 911 calls reporting the gunfire.

A total of 12 individuals confirmed to have been shot, with some sustaining serious injuries. Preliminary investigations reveal that there may have been multiple shooters and different types of firearms used in the attack, including long guns. Authorities believe that the shooting was not random and do not consider it a broader threat to the community.

Investigators from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, Hickory police, and the State Bureau of Investigation are conducting an active investigation. They are currently engaging with witnesses and partygoers but have faced difficulties gathering testimony as many attendees left the scene immediately after the shooting. As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests had been made, and officials are calling upon the public for any information that may assist in the case.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under examination, with authorities exploring possible motives, including potential disputes or underlying tensions among party attendees. Sheriff Don Brown remarked on the unusual nature of such incidents in the area and acknowledged a concerning trend of rising youth violence.

This tragic event has sparked discussions about safety and security in Catawba County, particularly regarding social gatherings involving young people. Law enforcement officials continue to emphasize the need for community vigilance and cooperation in addressing violent incidents.

As the investigation unfolds, updates are expected to follow, promising further clarity on the motivations behind the shooting and any developments regarding potential suspects.

Residents are encouraged to remain alert and report any information that may contribute to solving this case, as the community grapples with the impact of this sobering event.
