$13.5 million from the city for the construction of two affordable housing complexes in Uptown. While this request marks the largest made to the Housing Trust Fund so far, city staff have advised against moving forward with the proposal due to considerable delays the project has faced.

Originally launched almost a decade ago, the Brooklyn Village project has yet to break ground, leaving many questioning its timeline and viability. Developers are now revising their plans to promote all-affordable apartment buildings aimed at introducing affordable housing options in an affluent area where household incomes hover around $100,000.

Innovative Solutions in Nearby Projects

Charlotte isn’t the only area tackling housing; Bessemer City has recently transformed a historic textile mill into 139 affordable homes. This exciting redevelopment includes a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments catering to households earning 60% of the area median income. The revitalization effort aims to breathe new life into the downtown area and represents an impressive $36 million investment from a range of funding partners.

Meanwhile, southeast Charlotte has welcomed the Residences at Cedar Creek, a new 200-unit affordable housing community that just opened its doors. This development caters to families earning between 30% and 80% of Area Median Income (AMI) and was supported by a $2.5 million investment from the City of Charlotte’s Housing Trust Fund, along with $22 million from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency.
