Charlotte – Charlotte Catholic’s girls soccer team advanced to the Western N.C. 4A semifinals after securing a 2-1 victory over the defending state champion Marvin Ridge on Monday evening at OrthoCarolina Stadium. This win propels the Cougars into the next round of the North Carolina Class 4A girls soccer state playoffs, marking a significant achievement for the team as they chase their fourth state title.

Senior forward Jordyn Miller was pivotal in the match, scoring the game-winning goal in the 26th minute, making it her team-high 19th goal of the season. Miller also contributed by assisting teammate Savanna Leckner, whose goal opened the scoring just six minutes into the match. However, Marvin Ridge responded quickly, with Lucy Chin equalizing in the 20th minute, marking her own team-high 20th goal of the season.

Despite the equalizer, Charlotte Catholic’s strong defense, which had posted a remarkable goal differential of 106-7 prior to this game, managed to hold their ground. Sophomore goalkeeper Fallon Leckner made two crucial saves in the final four minutes, ensuring the victory for her team.

With this win, Charlotte Catholic improved their record to an impressive 20 games undefeated, with their only setback this season being a tie against South Mecklenburg. The Cougars are now preparing to face Weddington in the Western N.C. 4A semifinal, scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m.

This thrilling match resulted in the end of Marvin Ridge’s season, concluding with a record of 12-2-7 under second-year coach Jenna Borrelli. Charlotte Catholic’s triumphant performance was part of an overall successful playoff day for girls’ soccer teams in the Charlotte area.

Historically, Charlotte Catholic has previously clinched state titles in 2002, 2003, and 2011, and they aim to add another championship trophy to their collection this year. Jordyn Miller, who has made significant contributions throughout the season, has committed to play soccer at Tufts University in Somerville, Massachusetts, where she will continue her athletic career after high school.

The stage is now set as fans anticipate the upcoming semifinal clash, where Charlotte Catholic hopes to continue their strong showings in the playoff tournament.
