The efforts to improve City Council procedures will predominantly begin after the approval of the new city budget in early June. The primary goal is to foster better working relationships among council members, emphasizing understanding over disagreement. Johnson acknowledged the need for healing but expressed her readiness to initiate change, indicating that discussions had gone on long enough.

Budget Proposal and Community Engagement

During the City Council meeting, residents had the opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed budget and various community area plans. City Manager Marcus Jones presented a budget proposal that includes a 3% raise for city employees and plans to raise the minimum wage to $24 an hour. The People’s Budget Coalition has outlined specific funding requests aimed at improving local living conditions, including initiatives for air conditioning in rental units, a fund to assist in displacement cases, and increased support for homelessness services. The total budgetary requests from advocates are estimated to account for less than 1% of the proposed city budget, according to projections from the city manager.
