News Summary

In a shocking incident, a body was found in a creek in west Charlotte, prompting an ongoing death investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The body was discovered during a routine cleaning operation near Golf Acres Drive. Attempts for identification have been unsuccessful so far. This event is part of a larger series of investigations concerning human remains in the area, including a recent homicide case. Local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they seek clarity on these troubling incidents.

Charlotte – A body was discovered in a creek in west Charlotte on Friday afternoon, May 30, prompting an ongoing death investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The grim discovery was made around 1 p.m. along Golf Acres Drive, near the Billy Graham Parkway, during a routine cleaning operation by crews in the area.

Cleaning crews reported the find to emergency services, leading police to retrieve the submerged body shortly after their arrival. Despite attempts at identification, authorities have confirmed that the individual remains unidentified at this time and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has classified this incident as a death investigation, yet further details have not been disclosed. As the investigation continues, authorities are collecting evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the individual’s death. No additional information has been released regarding the condition of the body or potential leads in the case.

This incident is part of a series of investigations in the Charlotte area concerning the discovery of human remains. Earlier, on May 14, human remains were found at a salvage yard in Davidson County. Those remains were uncovered by an employee at Leonard Salvage in Lexington when he noticed them in a salvaged vehicle. The car had been brought to the salvage yard from Charlotte the day prior.

A computerized background check established that the vehicle belonged to 44-year-old Lee Anthony Funderburk, who had been missing since May 31, 2016. Funderburk was last seen in the Charlotte area on March 25, 2016, and was reported missing by his family shortly thereafter. Subsequent investigations confirmed that the remains belonged to Funderburk, and his cause of death was ruled as homicide by the Office of the Medical Examiner.

Further investigations into the homicide revealed that Funderburk’s death did not occur in Davidson County, leading detectives to hand over evidence to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for continued exploration. Funderburk’s case remains active as authorities seek answers regarding the circumstances of his death and any potential suspects involved.

In a related note, yet another body was discovered at Nevin Park in north Charlotte, causing police to initiate a separate death investigation. Police have cordoned off a section near a splash pad at the park while they gather evidence and investigate the circumstances surrounding this latest discovery. At this time, details regarding the Nevin Park incident have not been fully disclosed, as law enforcement continues its inquiries into the matter.

As police navigate these various death investigations, local residents and community members are left with questions regarding public safety and the events that have transpired in their neighborhoods. Investigators are urging anyone with information related to these cases to come forward, hoping that additional insights can provide clarity and answers for the families affected.

Both investigations highlight the serious nature of incidents affecting the Charlotte community and underscore the importance of thorough inquiry and collaboration among law enforcement agencies. Authorities continue to work diligently, striving to uncover the truth behind each case while seeking justice for the victims and closure for their families.
