News Summary

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has announced a relocation for several high school graduation ceremonies due to scheduling conflicts with the Charlotte Checkers’ playoff games. Affected schools include South Mecklenburg, Palisades, Mallard Creek, and Garinger High Schools. The ceremonies, originally set for Bojangles Coliseum, will now take place outdoors at PNC Music Pavilion on June 13, while times remain unchanged. This decision reflects CMS’s commitment to providing suitable venues for students while maintaining communication with families regarding the adjustments.

Charlotte High School Graduations Relocated Due to Hockey Playoff Schedule

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) has announced a change in the location for several high school graduation ceremonies scheduled for this month. The decision comes as a result of scheduling conflicts caused by the Charlotte Checkers advancing to the Calder Cup Finals in the American Hockey League.

The affected schools include South Mecklenburg High School, Palisades High School, Mallard Creek High School, and Garinger High School. Originally slated to take place at Bojangles Coliseum on June 13, the graduations will now be held outdoors at PNC Music Pavilion, located at 707 Pavilion Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28262.

Despite the change in venue, the graduation times will remain unchanged. Each school has informed the families of graduating seniors through letters detailing the adjustments. These letters are designed to respect families’ travel arrangements, work schedules, and other pre-existing commitments on the day of the ceremonies.

Reason for Venue Change

The Charlotte Checkers’ unexpected progression in the playoffs has created a scheduling conflict with Bojangles Coliseum, the original venue for the graduation ceremonies. As the Checkers continue to compete for the championship, CMS made the decision to relocate to ensure that scholars have a suitable venue for their graduation experience.

The Spectrum Center, traditionally used for larger school graduations, is also not an option due to ongoing renovation work. It is expected that ceremonies will return to the Spectrum Center once renovations are completed, anticipated by 2026.

Commitment to Students and Families

CMS is dedicated to ensuring that the graduation ceremonies remain special and memorable, despite the shift in locations. This commitment is reflected in their communication with families, prioritizing their convenience and the significance of the graduation experience.

Additional Information

A full schedule of CMS graduation ceremonies is available for families to access, ensuring they have all the necessary details for their respective schools. The replacements of the venues demonstrate CMS’s flexibility in adapting to unforeseen circumstances while maintaining the celebration of student achievements.

Overall, while the change of venue represents a shift in the graduation plans for the four affected high schools, the focus remains on honoring the graduates and creating a memorable experience for all families involved.
