Snowy street in Charlotte, NC during winter weather

News Summary

Charlotte is gearing up for its coldest weather in over two years as a significant arctic blast is set to bring temperatures below freezing for 75 to 85 hours. With highs in the 30s and lows dropping to the teens, residents should brace for potential snow and high winds. The cold front will not only affect daily life but may lead to hazardous conditions on the roads and for local energy supply. Stay safe and warm as this winter weather makes its presence felt!

Charlotte Prepares for a Frigid Blast Like No Other!

Hey there, Charlotte! Get ready to bundle up because next week, our beloved Queen City is bracing for its coldest weather in over two years! That’s right! We’re talking about an icy arctic blast sweeping through, with temperatures plummeting below freezing for a whopping 75 to 85 hours straight.

Who Ordered the Cold Front?

If you’ve got plans any time soon, you might want to think twice. The mercury is expected to dip into the 30s during the day, with lows spiraling down to the teens! To give you a better idea, look out for high temperatures around 33 degrees on Monday, falling to 32 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, and creeping up to 39 degrees on Thursday. It’s going to be a brisk week, folks!

Teens and Twenties, Here We Come!

Mark your calendars because Tuesday morning is going to feel like you woke up in the North Pole. We’re talking about morning lows that could drop as low as 15 degrees! Those frigid conditions will make it feel even colder with wind chills expected to plunge into the single digits. In the mountains, temperatures could feel like a bone-chilling -10 to -15 degrees below zero! Brr!

What’s the Impact?

Now with all this cold comes the potential for some serious impacts. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your pipes to avoid any bursts! Your pets will thank you if you protect them from the frigid air as well. Plus, energy supply could be tested under these extreme conditions. It’s a real winter wake-up call for everyone!

Snow? Yes, Please!

As if the cold isn’t enough, this week brings the chance of snow to our fair city! Snow chances have ramped up from late Tuesday through Wednesday, so get your shovels ready. Given the deep layer of cold air parked over the region, any precipitation we do get is likely to fall as snow. In the mountains, a winter weather advisory has already been issued for areas above 3500 feet, with total snow accumulations possibly reaching up to 4 inches! ❄️

Brace for High Winds!

On top of all this, winds gusting up to 50 mph are projected for Buncombe County until 7 a.m. Monday. Hold onto your hats, folks! It’s going to be quite the wild ride. This powerful wind will definitely make those cold temperatures feel even colder.

A Blast from the Past

For a little perspective, the last time Charlotte saw a low temperature of 15 degrees was back on January 21, 2024. It’s worth remembering that typical January highs are generally around 52 degrees on the 21st and 22nd, with normal lows around 32 degrees. So the forecasted high of 32 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday could mean Charlotte is staring down its coldest high temperatures since Christmas Eve 2022!

Storm Watch

There’s also a bit of buzz about a low-pressure system developing along the Gulf of Mexico. While it’s expected to veer south and east of Charlotte, which could be good news for us, let’s stay on alert for anything unexpected.

Drive Safe!

For those of you planning to hit the roads, be mindful! The National Weather Service has some important winter driving tips, given the hazardous road conditions anticipated in the coming days. Stay safe out there!

Stay Tuned!

Local meteorologists will be keeping a close watch on this evolving situation, so be sure to stay tuned for alerts and updates. We all just need to brace ourselves and stay warm as we make it through this chilly spell together.
