Charlotte’s Eric Charles McConnell, 52, Passes Away from Heart Attack During Vacation in Aruba

Charlotte, NC – Eric Charles McConnell, a 52-year-old resident of Charlotte, tragically passed away from a heart attack on May 12, 2025, while vacationing in Aruba with his wife and close friends. McConnell’s unexpected passing has left family and friends in shock as they mourn the loss of a cherished individual.

During the days preceding his death, McConnell participated in various outdoor activities, including snorkeling and kayaking, embracing the natural beauty Aruba has to offer. His sudden heart attack occurred amidst what was meant to be a joyous trip, highlighting the unpredictability of life.

Eric McConnell was born in Greensboro, NC, in 1972, to parents Charles and Karen McConnell. In 1988, the family relocated to Forest, VA, where he later graduated from Jefferson Forest High School in 1989. Pursuing higher education, he earned a degree in communications from James Madison University in 1993, which would help shape his professional path.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle McConnell, whom he married in 1993 after meeting in 1990. Together, they shared nearly 32 years of commitment, joy, and shared experiences. McConnell is also remembered by his four children: Lucas, Aaron, Mara, and Mary, as well as daughter-in-law Jayvia Owens. His devoted nature as a father is highlighted by his children’s reflections on his protective and humorous personality.

McConnell is additionally mourned by his parents, Charles and Karen, who still reside in Charlotte, and his sister, Lindsey, who is married to David Wallace and lives in Fort Mill, SC. He also leaves behind two dogs, Rocket and Suki, and his beloved grand-kitties, Sun Chip and Moon Pie, who will miss his presence dearly.

Professionally, Eric dedicated his career to fraud prevention at Bank of America and Wells Fargo. His creativity manifested through his talents as a comic artist, where he notably worked with major companies such as Marvel, DC, and Perna Studios. He created, wrote, and illustrated the original comic series titled “Remnant,” earning respect and affection from fans at various conventions for his imaginative works and kindness.

McConnell’s passions extended beyond the arts; he had a longstanding love for science fiction, martial arts, and the Boy Scouts, where he achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. He held black belts in two martial arts disciplines, showcasing both his athletic and determined spirit.

In the wake of his demise, a celebration of Eric McConnell’s life is scheduled for May 25 at 1:00 PM at McEwen Derita Chapel in Charlotte. Following the service, a gathering will be held at Armored Cow Brewing for family and friends who wish to share memories and honor his legacy. Attendees are encouraged to dress comfortably as they come together to celebrate the life of a man who had a significant impact on so many.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to pay tribute to Eric’s memory can contribute to a fundraiser set up to support his wife and children during this challenging time. Contributions can be made through an online fundraiser that aims to assist Eric’s family in navigating this unexpected tragedy.
