Tragic Train Incidents in Charlotte Leave Community in Mourning

Charlotte has seen its share of train-related tragedies in 2025 that have shaken the community. In a span of just a few months, the city mourned the loss of several individuals following unfortunate collisions with trains. Each incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of safety around railway tracks.

April’s Fatal Accident

On April 19, 2025, the life of 49-year-old Wilfredo Negron was cut tragically short. The accident occurred around 1:20 p.m. near the intersection of Archdale Drive and Old Pineville Road in south Charlotte. Reports indicate that Negron was walking on the train tracks when he was struck by a southbound train.

Rescue teams responded swiftly, but Negron was found unresponsive on the east side of the tracks with life-threatening injuries. Sadly, despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The loss of Negron created a wave of sadness in the area, as many recalled his kindness and cheerful spirit.

March’s Devastation

William David Biggerstaff, a 62-year-old man, lost his life after being struck by an Amtrak train. The collision happened on the westernmost track near the 9600 block of Old Concord Road around midday.

Biggerstaff was found in the middle of the tracks, unresponsive, with serious injuries. Emergency personnel was on-site promptly, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead right there. Following the incident, authorities temporarily closed Old Concord Road between Suther Road and Lexington Circle as they conducted an investigation.

October Tragedy

9th, 79-year-old Curtis Lee Hayes was struck by a CSX train on Rozzelles Ferry Road near Honeywood Avenue in north Charlotte. Unlike earlier incidents, Hayes was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but succumbed to those injuries three days later on October 12.

Initial investigations reveal that Hayes was heading westbound along Honeywood Avenue when he was tragically hit by the train. The investigation is still ongoing, and anyone with information about the incident is urged to reach out to Detective Sessoms at 704-432-2169, Ext. 3. The community hopes that more details will soon arise to better understand how such a horrifying event could have occurred.

Calls for Awareness

With three deadly incidents reported in less than six months, locals are rallying around a critical message: train safety matters. These accidents remind us all to stay alert and exercise caution around train tracks. The emotional toll of such losses weighs heavily on family, friends, and community members.

If you ever find yourself near train tracks, remember to be vigilant. Look both ways, and always follow safety signs and signals. The lives lost are not just mere statistics; they belonged to real people with stories, families, and dreams.

Charlotte’s residents hope to see improvements that could prevent these tragedies in the future. Whether it be better signage, awareness campaigns, or community outreach, the goal remains the same: fewer lives lost, and a safer environment for everyone.

The lingering sadness can feel overwhelming, but it is essential to honor those who lost their lives by taking safety seriously. Every individual’s life is precious, and every precaution we take may very well save another life.
