News Summary

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is switching to remote learning on February 19, 2025, due to forecasted winter weather. The decision comes as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing and light precipitation is forecasted, potentially resulting in less than an inch of snow mixed with sleet and rain. Other local districts are also adapting their schedules. Parents should prepare for a day without extracurricular activities, as the CMS confirms that all after-school programs are suspended.

Winter Weather Forces Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to Embrace Remote Learning

Charlotte finds itself gearing up for another round of winter weather as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) switches to remote learning on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. In a recent announcement, made just on Tuesday evening, CMS shared that this decision was made due to some chilly temperatures and the forecast of unpredictable wintery conditions.

The mercury is expected to dip just below freezing by Tuesday night, so bundle up if you’re stepping outside! On Wednesday, temperatures are predicted to struggle its way up to a mere 36 degrees. Making matters more interesting, the National Weather Service is forecasting light precipitation to begin just after sunrise. The forecast indicates that the snow will peak late in the morning before wrapping up in the afternoon.

While it might not lead to a snow day full of snowball fights, residents of the Charlotte metro area should expect up to less than an inch of snow on Wednesday, mixed with some sleet and rain. So, keep your umbrellas and snow boots handy, just in case!

CMS Recreational Activities on Hold

Now, for those who love after-school activities: CMS has confirmed that there will be no extracurricular activities, facility use, or athletics on this snow-flecked Wednesday. Developmental schedules have been given a pause, but everyone can breathe easy knowing that all scheduled testing will continue once *in-person classes* resume.

Before and after-school enrichment programs will also be suspended on this particular remote learning day. So, if you’ve been relying on those to manage your little ones’ busy schedules, make other arrangements!

Other Districts React to Winter Weather

It’s not just CMS that’s tackling the wintery mix! Several other local educational institutions are adjusting their schedules as well:

  • Cabarrus County Schools will also have an asynchronous remote learning day, keeping classroom doors closed.
  • Catawba County Schools announced a remote learning day and parents are encouraged to keep an eye out for instructions from their child’s school.
  • In Chester County School District, students will be enjoying a break as schools are closed from February 18-21 for a previously scheduled spring intersession.
  • Clover School District will similarly keep campuses closed from February 17-21, taking advantage of a previously scheduled winter intersession.

  • Hickory City Schools instructors will be managing remote learning from either home or campus facilities.
  • Iredell-Statesville Schools opted for a remote learning day too!
