Accident scene on Interstate 77 with scattered debris and emergency response.

News Summary

A serious accident involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 South caused major highway closures when the truck lost its cargo of mirror glass sheets. The incident, occurring around 10 a.m., scattered debris across three lanes, leading to hazardous conditions. North Carolina Department of Transportation workers responded quickly to clear the area, stabilizing traffic flow by noon. The incident highlights safety risks associated with heavy load losses and vehicle traffic management, especially near major routes like Interstate 77.

Charlotte, NC – A serious accident involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 South has caused major highway closures due to the loss of its cargo, which consisted of mirror glass sheets. The incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday when the truck was attempting to take the exit to Interstate 485. The vehicle lost most of its load while maneuvering to avoid a collision.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reported that the truck’s cargo scattered across three lanes of the highway, creating hazardous conditions for motorists. As a result, vehicles began to drive on the shoulder of the road to avoid the debris, which notably included sharp glass shards. This situation soon escalated when a large truck got stuck on the saturated shoulder caused by recent rain, further halting traffic in the area.

The NCDOT’s Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) promptly responded to the scene. Crews worked quickly to clear one lane of the highway, which allowed for a limited resumption of traffic flow. A second lane was also cleared soon after the initial lane was reopened. However, the third lane remained closed for an extended period as it was heavily laden with glass shards.

Maintenance crews with specialized equipment arrived at the scene around 11:45 a.m. to assist in cleaning the affected area. They utilized sweepers and blowers to remove the debris, and traffic was halted a second time to facilitate thorough cleaning of one lane at a time. This effort allowed minimal traffic release as it was undertaken with safety considerations in mind.

After hours of work by the NCDOT crews, the highway was fully reopened around 1 p.m. All lanes were cleared and cleaned of debris, restoring normal traffic conditions. The timely response of the IMAP and maintenance staff mitigated the potential for further accidents and reduced the duration of the highway closure.

Interstate 77 near the South Carolina border is a key arterial route for local and interstate traffic, making such incidents particularly disruptive. The loss of a significant load like glass not only poses risks to safety but also creates logistical challenges for transport and traffic management services.

In light of the situation, the public is reminded to exercise caution while driving, especially in the wake of such accidents, and to be aware of road conditions that may be affected by weather or heavy vehicle traffic.
