News Summary

A Monroe police officer was shot multiple times during a pursuit of a suspect who later died in a firefight with police. The officer is stable at a local hospital. The incident sparked a large-scale manhunt and is linked to a previous homicide. Investigations are ongoing.

Monroe – A Monroe police officer was shot multiple times during a pursuit early Saturday morning, resulting in a large-scale manhunt and the death of the suspect. The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Joshua Hayden Sikes, was killed by police shortly after the officer was injured. The officer, a female, is currently in stable condition at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte following treatment for her injuries.

The incident began at approximately 1:45 a.m. when a police officer spotted a suspicious vehicle on Old Charlotte Highway near Rocky River Road. Upon attempting to conduct a traffic stop, Sikes, who was driving the vehicle, sped away, which initiated a chase lasting about four minutes. The police deployed stop sticks to disable Sikes’ vehicle on Goldmine Road near River Chase Drive.

Once stopped, Sikes reportedly opened fire on the officers, injuring the female officer multiple times before fleeing into a densely wooded area. This prompted a significant response from law enforcement, including K9 units, a drone, and air support from a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police helicopter.

Following an extensive search, Monroe police located Sikes at around 3:52 a.m. in the woods, where he was reportedly armed with a rifle. When he fired at officers once more, they returned fire, which resulted in Sikes’ death at the scene.

The incident is linked to a separate crime, as investigators later found a deceased individual, 23-year-old Alvin Parson, whose death has been ruled a homicide by gunshot wound. Evidence suggests that Sikes shot Parson prior to the police encounter, and authorities believe he was actively evading capture during the traffic stop.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is being handled by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, while the Union County Sheriff’s Office is leading the homicide investigation regarding Parson’s death. Sheriff Eddie Cathey addressed the dangers law enforcement officers face while offering condolences to the family of the deceased.

This incident underscores the potential risks that law enforcement officers encounter while performing their duties. The Monroe Police Department has expressed gratitude that the officer involved in the shooting survived, and the community is rallying to support her recovery.

As the investigations continue, authorities are working to piece together the events surrounding both the shooting of the officer and the homicide of Parson, aiming to provide clarity and justice regarding these tragic occurrences.
