Charlotte – A recent audit has revealed that over 70,000 pieces of delayed and undelivered mail were found at various United States Postal Service (USPS) facilities in the Charlotte area. The findings raise substantial concerns about the efficiency of mail processing and delivery in the region.
The audit, conducted by the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General’s Office in April, reported 19,374 delayed letters and flats, along with a staggering 54,880 delayed packages, at the facilities that were inspected. This backlog of mail is being closely examined following complaints from customers and union representatives alike.
Miriam Bell, the president of the Charlotte Area Local American Postal Workers Union, expressed serious concerns regarding the extensive backlog. She noted that it is unusual for such high volumes of mail to be delayed simultaneously. The increased delays have been linked to recent modifications in USPS processing methods, which have shifted the responsibility of moving mail to large regional facilities located far from where it is collected instead of processing it locally in a timely manner.
The situation has resulted in significant changes to delivery times, particularly for Priority Mail. Previously promised delivery times of two to three days have now expanded to three to seven days, with some deliveries taking even longer than that. This has created considerable inconvenience for customers, especially those awaiting time-sensitive communications or packages.
The audit highlighted multiple underlying issues contributing to the delays, including chronic understaffing, inadequate training, transportation inefficiencies, and management not strictly following processing protocols. These factors have combined to exacerbate the backlog of mail being processed and delivered to customers.
Further highlighting the problem, Tiffany Alexander, the vice president of the American Postal Workers Union, pointed out that understaffing has been an ongoing challenge within USPS, compounding the current issues presented by the audit.
Customers have begun to express frustration over the disruptions caused by these delays. Individuals like Aundre Cole reported significant inconveniences, noting that some critical mail has not arrived as expected. Another customer, Courtney Covington, described the service as a “failed system” due to the overwhelming backlog at local post offices.
In response to the issues identified, the USPS North Carolina district manager acknowledged the audit findings and confirmed that management is actively working on measures to rectify the situation. This includes re-evaluating current operations and staffing levels at the impacted facilities.
This is not the first instance of mail delays in the area. A previous audit published in January indicated comparable problems at a USPS Processing and Distribution Center in Richmond, Virginia, which services the northeastern North Carolina region. Similarly, a 2021 audit in Raleigh revealed over 6,000 pieces of mail delayed for similar operational reasons.
At the time of the inspection, many of the thousands of letters and packages not only remained undelivered but had also not even been scanned into the USPS tracking system. Currently, North Carolina’s USPS service performance score stands at 69.9 out of 80, which places it in the mid-range when compared to other states.
USPS officials have announced that they are collaborating with the facilities mentioned in the audit to rectify the identified issues and enhance overall service efficiency. Customers experiencing major delays or missing mail are encouraged to report these instances via a feedback survey designed to assess service performance further.
In summary, the recent audit has brought to light significant challenges facing USPS in the Charlotte area, indicating a need for immediate corrective actions to improve mail delivery efficiency and reliability.
