Charlotte, NC – Robert Henry Hough, a respected engineer, devoted family man, and cherished community member, passed away at the age of 76. Hough’s legacy of love and dedication will be remembered by his family and friends, as well as by the countless individuals whose lives he touched throughout his career and personal life.

Born on March 27, 1949, in Plattsburgh, New York, Hough was the son of Henry and Helen (Plumley) Hough. He was raised in Union Falls, New York, where he developed a strong appreciation for family, education, and the outdoors. Over the years, Hough lived in several locations, including Keeseville, New York, and Gorham, Maine, before settling in Matthews, North Carolina.

Hough contributed significantly to the transportation industry, where he worked for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad and the Maine Department of Transportation. He earned undergraduate degrees in Civil Engineering and Business, followed by a Master of Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Industrial Technology. His comprehensive educational background allowed him to excel in his field, and he was known for his practical approach to engineering challenges.

A devoted husband to Linda Hough for 53 years, Hough enjoyed traveling and spending quality time with her. The couple was rarely apart, demonstrating their deep bond and commitment to one another. Together, they fostered a loving home environment for their two sons, Jeremy and Chris, as well as for their daughters-in-law, Julie and Kelly. Hough was proud of his role as a father and later embraced the joys of being a grandfather to his four grandsons: Will, Robby, Henry, and Jones.

Throughout his life, Hough was a passionate mentor to his children, teaching them practical skills. He was instrumental in helping them build their first house, as well as creating projects like half pipes, treehouses, and bedroom furniture. His motto, “I can do that,” reflected his hands-on approach and willingness to tackle challenges head-on, instilling a sense of resourcefulness in his family.

Hough’s love for the outdoors was evident in his many hobbies. He found joy in camping, hiking, and walking on sandy beaches alongside Linda. Family gatherings were an integral part of Hough’s life, where he relished creating lasting memories with loved ones. His commitment to his family extended beyond his immediate relatives, as he actively participated in the lives of his nieces and other extended family members, maintaining warm, loving relationships.

Following his passing, Hough is survived by his beloved wife Linda, his two sons, their wives, his grandsons, and numerous nieces and extended family. His contributions to both his family and career have created a lasting impact, leaving behind a significant legacy of love and dedication.

A funeral service honoring Hough’s life is scheduled for 11 am on July 11, 2025, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or encourages spending time outdoors in his memory, honoring his passion for nature and the wonder it brings.
