Charlotte, NC – A series of shootings over the weekend has left one person dead and several others injured, prompting police investigations across multiple locations in the city.
The most tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning around 2 a.m. near the Encore Nightclub in the 300 block of North College Street, where Arleigh Bryant, a 37-year-old employee of the club, was fatally shot. In connection to this shooting, a 16-year-old has been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He was also involved in a separate shooting that injured five other individuals.
Two adults identified as Damien Evans II, 25, and Shawn Cannon, 24, have also been arrested and are facing several charges, including possession of a firearm by a felon. Reports indicate that Evans was seen holding a 9mm Glock during the shooting. After the incident, both suspects fled in a vehicle that was later found abandoned. A firearm was discovered inside the vehicle, and in court proceedings, Evans was denied bond while Cannon received a $3 million bond.
In addition to the nightclub shooting, another incident took place in the Plaza Midwood area on Sunday morning around 1:30 a.m., where one person suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. This followed a shooting Saturday morning around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Kenilworth Avenue and Charlottetowne Avenue, which left another individual in critical condition. The police have not yet released details regarding the motive or suspects in the Saturday shooting.
On the same day as the nightclub shooting, a third shooting occurred in southwest Charlotte near West Arrowood and Nations Ford Road, resulting in another individual being hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Additionally, a shooting on McBride Street in northeast Charlotte on Friday evening left one person injured, requiring hospitalization for life-threatening injuries, further contributing to the weekend’s violence.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has assured the community that officers will maintain a strong presence in the uptown area, particularly during peak hours when nearby restaurants and clubs are busiest. In response to the surge in violence, the Hive nightclub has announced that it will enforce stricter controls regarding traffic and parking in the alleyway and heighten security measures to ensure public safety.
The CMPD is actively investigating the incidents, and further updates are anticipated as more details emerge.
