She graduated from Woodlawn High School in Baltimore and went on to attend East Carolina University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. During her time at university, she was an active member of the Delta Zeta Sorority.
Her career began as a Home Economics teacher in Salisbury, Maryland, where she taught for eight years. Cathy later transitioned into the medical field, attending Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury to become a nurse.
