Joe was born on January 25, 1953, in Raleigh, NC, to Bill and Mildred Silver. He lived most of his life in Charlotte and was known for his infectious personality and love for people, leaving a profound impact on all who knew him.
Joe Silver, who was born with special needs, had a unique ability to connect with those around him. He displayed genuine interest in the lives of family, friends, and even strangers, frequently asking about their jobs and the local weather. His joyful nature was highlighted by his simple pleasures, such as the sound of car tires squealing, bottle rockets exploding, and delighted waves from passersby. His collection of pens, flashlights, key chains, hats, necklaces, rubber bracelets, and suspenders, along with coins, showcased his spirited personality.
As an avid fan of classic television, Joe particularly enjoyed shows like The Andy Griffith Show and Gunsmoke. He was also one of the first residents to move into a specialized group home for individuals with special needs in Charlotte, a pioneering step that underscored his importance in fostering an inclusive community. Since the 1970s, Joe had been residing at InReach Group Homes, where he received affectionate care from both staff and fellow residents.
For over 50 years, Joe was a devoted member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he embraced the community and built lasting relationships. His profound faith in Jesus was a cornerstone of his life, influencing those who knew him and further deepening his connections within the church family.
Joe is predeceased by his parents, Bill and Mildred Silver. He is survived by his sister Anne Silver, and his brother Bobby Silver along with his wife Laura, all of whom reside in Charlotte. Joe is also survived by three nieces: Hannah McKnight from Boston, Lydia Wilson from Charlotte, and Abigail Gaunce from Auburn, AL. Additionally, he was a proud uncle to two great-nieces, Marien McKnight and Dorothy Wilson. Numerous aunts, cousins, and friends who cared for Joe throughout his life will also remember him fondly.
The funeral services for Joe Silver are scheduled for July 22, 2025, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Harris Campus Chapel in Charlotte, NC. The visitation will begin at 10:00 am, leading up to the service at 11:00 am. A graveside service will be held at Glenwood Cemetery in Marion, NC, at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hickory Grove Baptist Church or InReach Group Homes of Charlotte. Joe’s legacy of kindness and joy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him, as his spirit profoundly enriched the lives of everyone he encountered.
