CONCORD, NC — William Byron rallied from a mid-race penalty to claim victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 18. This win marks Byron’s fifth victory in the series and is notably his first at his home track, solidifying his status as a formidable contender in the series.
Byron, who drives the No. 17 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, recently signed a four-year contract extension with the team, highlighting their commitment to his development as a driver. The race concluded in dramatic fashion, with Byron overtaking reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier on the first lap of overtime, securing the lead after an eventful race filled with challenges.
The event was marred by a total of 11 cautions, including a substantial wreck involving drivers Jeb Burton and Brennan Poole, which led to the final caution that set the stage for the race’s conclusion. Connor Zilisch finished in second place, followed closely by Nick Sanchez in third. Despite an impressive performance throughout the race, Allgaier, who dominated early on, found himself in fourth place at the end.
Allgaier’s strategy became a point of contention during the race. He was leading the field when a caution was called on Lap 180 but decided against pitting for fresh tires. This choice proved costly, as Byron had taken advantage of the caution to secure new tires, allowing him to reclaim the lead.
Byron had initially faced setbacks after receiving a pit-road speeding penalty during the Stage 2 break, which forced him to the back of the field for a restart on Lap 99. After surviving a multicar accident in Turn 1 on Lap 184, Byron found himself in ninth position but quickly gained momentum in subsequent restarts.
Throughout the race, Allgaier led an impressive 103 laps, while Byron dominated the early stages, leading 69 out of the first 71 laps. Although Allgaier expressed disappointment over his strategy, he still maintains a healthy 72-point lead over second-place Austin Hill in the series standings.
In the final standings, after Byron, Zilisch, and Sanchez, Sammy Smith finished in fifth place, followed by Dean Thompson, Josh Williams, Austin Hill, Ryan Ellis, and Christian Eckes. Notably, Ryan Ellis achieved his first top-10 finish in the Xfinity Series in his 144th career start.
Four Sunoco rookies — Zilisch, Sanchez, Thompson, and Eckes — made significant impressions by finishing in the top 10 of the race. However, the day did have its setbacks. Sammy Smith’s No. 8 car was disqualified for failing to meet the minimum weight requirement, resulting in a last-place finish. Additionally, the No. 00 car driven by Sheldon Creed received a citation for a loose lug nut, resulting in a monetary fine.
Looking ahead, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will continue with the Tennessee Lottery 250 next week at Nashville Superspeedway, where teams will look to build on their performances from Charlotte.
