CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 21-year-old man riding a motorcycle was killed Friday night when he collided with an SUV that was turning off Wilkinson Boulevard in west Charlotte, and police say his speed contributed to the crash.
The wreck happened at about 8:32 p.m. Friday along the 2300 block of Wilkinson Boulevard, close to where the road meets West Morehead Street. Investigators with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the rider was headed outbound on a Yamaha and moving very fast. A 26-year-old driver in a Chevrolet Blazer was turning left from Wilkinson onto West Morehead when the two collided.
Officers who arrived found the rider down in the road with critical injuries. MEDIC took him to a hospital, where he died. His family has been told of his death.
The department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit is handling the case. Detectives have concluded that speed played a part, and they are still working to learn whether impairment was involved on the rider’s side. No charges have been announced.
Wilkinson Boulevard is one of the main corridors linking uptown with the airport area and west Charlotte, and the crash comes amid a run of deadly motorcycle wrecks around the region. Days earlier, a motorcycle was struck by a car making a left turn in nearby Tega Cay, a crash that killed two people.
