CHICAGO, Ill. — The second weekend of the Illinois High School Association football playoffs delivered one of its wildest finishes in Antioch, where ninth-seeded Sycamore knocked off the top seed 32-28 in a Class 5A game Saturday.
Antioch appeared to score on a long heave in the closing seconds, but officials ruled an inadvertent whistle had sounded. The hosts got one untimed snap from the Sycamore 13-yard line instead, and the visiting Spartans picked off a tipped pass in the end zone to move on.
Elsewhere in Class 5A on Saturday, Providence Catholic outlasted Morgan Park 42-34 at Stagg Stadium in Chicago.
In Class 7A, Lincoln-Way West went to Burbank and beat host St. Laurence 21-14 in overtime, scoring the winner on a 10-yard run.
Other second-round results across the state included top-seeded Lincoln-Way East over Hinsdale Central 24-7, Downers Grove North over St. Rita 17-7, New Trier over Homewood-Flossmoor 26-23, East St. Louis over St. Patrick 64-6 and Aurora Christian over Maroa-Forsyth 28-7.
