Charlotte Voters Decide $425 Million in City Bonds Today

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte voters heading to the polls today will find three city bond questions worth a combined $425 million on their ballots, alongside a U.S. Senate race and three proposed changes to the state constitution.

The city bonds are split into three pots. Transportation money would go to major street and mobility projects, the housing bonds would back affordable housing, and the neighborhood bonds would pay for infrastructure work in neighborhoods across the city. City officials say the borrowing is already built into the current budget and tax rate, and no extra property tax hike is planned to cover it.

Polls close at 7:30 p.m., and anyone in line by then can still vote. Election Day voters must go to their assigned precinct, which the state voter search tool will show along with a sample ballot. A photo ID is needed to vote in person. Voters who forget one can go home and come back with it, or vote a provisional ballot and show the ID at the county elections office within five business days, before noon on that last day.

The statewide amendments would write the photo ID rule into the constitution for all voters including those voting by mail, lower the highest income tax rate the state could ever charge to 3.5%, down from 7%, and direct lawmakers to set limits on local property tax increases.

Turnout statewide is already at a midterm record, with more than 2.8 million people voting early or by mail. Mail ballots that arrive after today will not count even with an earlier postmark, so anyone still holding one should hand-deliver it to the county board of elections before polls close or vote in person instead.
