CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was killed and eight others were hurt in a crash early Sunday on the inner loop of Interstate 277 in Uptown Charlotte, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating.
The wreck happened in the early-morning hours on the inner loop near 10th Street, along the stretch known as the Brookshire Freeway. One early account placed it near the Independence Boulevard exit. Police later reported the crash at about 1:45 a.m. and confirmed in a news release later Sunday morning that it was deadly.
Medic, the county ambulance service, said one person was pronounced dead. Three of the eight injured were in life-threatening condition. A fourth person was seriously hurt, and the remaining four suffered lesser wounds. Every one of them went to a hospital. An early count from medics had listed seven people taken for treatment.
The person who died had not been publicly identified as of Sunday, and police had not said what caused the crash or how many vehicles were involved.
Officers closed the inner loop for a time while detectives worked the scene and urged drivers to stay away from the area and use other routes.

The neighborhoods that border Uptown include South End, First Ward and the Fourth Ward historic district.
The crash remained under investigation Sunday, and police had released no further details on it.
